The particular challenge of the Alte Schmiede lies in carefully opening up an authentic site more than 450 years old to a contemporary exhibition without altering its character.
The historic space forms both the starting point and the central exhibit of the design. Soot-darkened walls, timber beams, the forge, fire pits and original tools remain visible and are deliberately integrated into the exhibition. New display elements are kept deliberately restrained, creating a contemporary contrast to the historic fabric through charcoal tones and orange accents.
Historical references are incorporated directly into the design, while additional illustrations, graphics and interactive elements communicate the story without overwhelming the space.
The result is a clear dialogue between heritage and the present: the new elements remain subordinate to the historic setting, making its traces visible and giving them a contemporary stage.
